James Gilliland (my sixth great grandfather) and Revolutionary War Patriot of Greenbrier County, Virginia (present day West Virginia).
In Richard Hill Gillilan’s Biography from Greenbriar County West Virginia it states that Richard’s grandfather, James Gillilan (who is my 6th great grandfather), was one of the pioneers in the Falling Springs vicinity. He is documented as coming from Augusta County, Virginia where he was reportedly born March 16 1749. It lists James as settling on 400 acres of land near the Falling Spring. It also states that he brought the first wagon to the county and took his produce to the market in Philadelphia. He married Lydia Armstrong (my 6th great grandmother), who died July 22, 1818.
In T.C. Miller’s “West Virginia and Its People,” James is documented as being married to Lydia Armstrong. Please see below:
James died on Februrary 14. 1844 at the age of 99.
Here are copies of James’ Revolutionary War Pension records:
James Gilliland is listed in the DAR ancestor record as Ancestor #: A044934.
